The beautiful village of Vrede, surrounded by a vast agricultural region, was founded in 1863 after a settlement of a local argument on where to establish a new township. It served briefly as the seat of the Orange Free State government during the South African War of 1899-1902 and was the focal point of the Boer Rebellion of 1914. The first European landowners of this area named it Vrede (peace). Today Vrede finds itself at the hub of a 10 000ha region of agricultural plenty, including the Free State's largest stock fairs of maize, wheat, mutton, wool, beef, dairy products and poultry.
